Occasionally I want to put some pics up so people can see things I think they might be interested in, and inviting them to visit this page is much more efficient than emailing stuff to them.
We had 75mm rain in a couple of hours, starting around 7pm. Our neighbours' house is much more low-lying than ours and has been flooded in the past in storms like this, so they'd built a flood defence around the perimeter of their garden, comprising a 15cm high raised flower bed, retained by timber. Sadly, the water on this occasion was right up to the top of the raised bed and as cars passed, water was sloshed into the garden. The front door being not very waterproof, we needed to keep as much water at bay as we could, so we set to with various bowls and buckets, baling frantically for the whole time. Other neighbours and passers-by mucked in too, and the amount of water that actually got into the house was minimal.
All this time, the thunder and lightning was circling around, often really rather close. I was intensely aware (though said nothing at the time) that an ex-work colleague from 15 years previously had recently been killed by lightning striking the swimming pool he was dangling his legs in.
This is a 6 Mb wmv file which runs for about 55 seconds. The quality is not as good as the original avi, but that came to 33 Mb! Just click the thumbnail. It was taken from inside our front door and shows me (sorry, not a pretty sight!) in my swimming trunks, being the only sensible way to be dressed under the circumstances.
